Conservatives can win in Lewisham East...

The Conservatives can win in Lewisham East. That is the message that comes out of the results of the election for the Mayor of London in May 2008.

The results across Lewisham East's 7 wards were:

Labour 9879

Conservative 8820

Lib Dems 2705

(Source: London Elects*)

On the basis of these results, there has been a big swing in Lewisham East towards the Conservatives since the last General Election.

These results were confirmed in a recent by-election for Lewisham Council. In February 2009, the Conservatives finished 1 vote behind Labour in Downham Ward - a ward that has not traditionally been Conservative in Council elections. So the gap between Labour and the Conservatives in Lewisham East is closing all the time.

Your local Conservative activists are working to show you that the Conservative Party offers you the only serious and positive alternative to this tired and discredited Labour Government.

With your help, we will win in Lewisham East. If you’d like to join our growing team of activists, please contact me.

* A further 4302 people voted Conservative across Lewisham's 18 Wards by postal vote. But Ward-specific data does not exist for postal votes, so it is not possible to be precise about the total votes cast in Lewisham East. If the postal votes were allocated in proportion to the number of Wards, then the total Conservative vote in Lewisham East would have been 10,493.

Always Labour?

The Conservative Party can beat Labour in Lewisham East. In last year's London Mayor election, more than 10,000 people in Lewisham East voted Conservative. That's our biggest vote here since 1992. And, significantly, we were a very close second to Labour.

So the message is clear: if you want to get rid of Gordon Brown's Labour Government and to give this country a positive future, then you need to vote Conservative at the next General Election.

I am working to persuade you that we have the principles and the policies to sort out Britain's current problems. On this website you can find out more about me and my core beliefs. You can also find out more about Conservative policies to turn Britain around and how these policies will benefit people in Lewisham East.

I very much hope to earn your trust over the coming months, so that you will once again return a Conservative as MP for Lewisham East. Only the Conservative Party can offer this country a way out of the difficulties that we presently face.

There is nothing inevitable about Labour winning in Lewisham East.

Most recently, Lewisham East had a Conservative MP from 1983 to 1992.

Since 1992 we have led the challenge to Labour in Lewisham East. The Lib Dems have always finished third.

Your vote really counts at the next General Election. After 17 years of Labour in Lewisham East, it is time for a change.

If you want change, you need to vote Conservative. Only we are in a position to deliver it.

Liberal Democrat Switch

Increasing numbers of Liberal Democrat voters are recognising that only the Conservatives can beat Labour in Lewisham East.

There have been two council by-elections in Lewisham East since the Local Council elections in 2006. In both, the Lib Dem share of the vote has swung to the Conservatives, as follows:

Whitefoot Ward By-election, 3 September 2007: Swing from Lib Dems to Conservatives of 2.8%.

Downham Ward By-election, 19 February 2009: Swing from Lib Dems to Conservatives of 9.1%.

We are seeing a lot of Lib Dem supporters switch to us because they share our values and approach – such as our commitment to civil liberties, the green agenda and strong public services.

David Cameron wants to lead a modern and moderate Conservative Government that improves the quality of life for everyone and promotes social responsibility, not state control.

You may have made the switch. If so, we would love to welcome you - please get in contact.
